Sustainable Energy Ireland Competition: Winner - NCAD, Ireland

A winning team project for Sustainable Energy Ireland, SEI, now SEAI. A product creating awareness of sustainable energy was the target. Phi Kettle goes above and beyond this aim with its ergonomic and quirky design.

A double-walled transparent polycarbonate casing allows the user to see how much water is being used with the aid of markers on the side of the kettle.

Current Kettle Issues which were addressed - Boiling more water than required, energy is wasted, water cools too quickly, scalding to the touch, unnecessary reboiling. Alongside this the issue of wrist strain resulting from heavy kettles was also tackled.

Filling of Phi kettle is made easy by a circular spout positioned directly above hand level. The weight of the kettle is closer to the user's hand and balanced so as not to impose as much strain on the wrist as a standard kettle. This is especially useful for elderly or weaker users.

A two way pressure release valve lid is used to ensure heat is kept in but steam is released when necessary.

As can be seen, at all times during lifting and pouring, the water in the kettle is much closer to the hand and wrist of the user, resulting in much less strain on the user's wrist.

Phi Kettle, whilst having a very quirky and fun design, becomes almost stylishly camouflaged into its surroundings due to its transparent casing.

Being double-walled, no matter where the user touches the kettle, it will not burn or scald them.

With three coloured lights indicating if the water inside is cold, warm or hot enough for use, reboiling unnecessarily will no longer be a problem.
