Edi Trailer: Sakaramenta, Malawi

This trailer was designed for a 12 year old girl with cerebral palsy. Her carers needed a new way of getting her to school and so requested a trailer that could be pulled by a bicycle, and which could tolerate the bad roads of Malawi.

The trailer can be disconnected from the bike and used as a wheelchair. Adjustable cushions for the head and hips allow the user to grow with the chair.

A seat belt was provided, not only for safety on the road, but to help supporting Edina whilst sitting. This in addition to a tilted chair, helps keep Edina sitting comfortably upright.

As weather in Malawi can be unpredictable and rains can be quite heavy, a rain cover was requested for shelter.

Velcro was used to join the rain cover sections. Ventilation was provided by small eyelets surrounding the cover, vents at the foot area and loose fabric vents on either side of the chair.
