Playhouses: Sakaramenta, Malawi

Improvement to existing playhouses includes the addition of a monkey bars with steps and more safety barriers. I also worked with Dutch designer Boris Van Lettow on a new luxury playhouse design for a private garden.

Luxury Playhouse

Luxury Playhouse

This luxury playhouse and climbing wall combination was designed for a private customer who was expanding the playground equipment in their garden. The standard playhouse was added to and connected to a small climbing wall to create an exciting play area for the garden.

The original playhouse had a small number of barriers, a stairs style ladder and slide positioned high off the ground.

New Playhouse

New Playhouse

This new playhouse has been risen slightly to cater for older children, the slide end height has been reduced to increase its safety, the ladder has been changed to a pole ladder requiring children to climb it using their hands for safety purposes, I designed monkey bars to be added for extra fun and good exercise and I added additional barriers to help with safety.

The customer interested in our designing a luxury playhouse wanted a private area for the children to play which was also safe and fun. Here, working with Boris Van Lettow, we decided to use wooden panels to close up the walls, add doors and windows and a picket fence for safety.

This was a challenging project as most customers want their new designs at small prices, which is a big ask in Malawi with materials being so expensive. We believe the customers were happy with the design but could not manage the price for now. We're hoping that will change in the future.
